How to Check Car Oil

Oil Change

Maintaining your car’s engine is important for its longevity and performance. One essential aspect of car maintenance is checking the oil regularly. This guide will show you how to check car oil and maintain the right oil level for optimal engine health!

How to Check Car Oil – Step-by-Step Guide

  • Park on Level Ground: Ensure your car is parked on a flat surface to get accurate oil level readings.
  • Turn Off the Engine: Let the engine cool down for a few minutes before checking the oil.
  • Locate the Dipstick: Open the hood and find the oil dipstick, usually marked with a bright-colored handle, often yellow or orange.
  • Pull Out the Dipstick: Remove the dipstick from the engine, wipe it clean with a cloth or paper towel, and insert it back into the dipstick tube completely.
  • Recheck the Dipstick: Now, pull out the dipstick again and examine the oil level. There will be two marks on the dipstick – a low and a high mark. The oil level should be between these two marks.
  • Add Oil if Needed: If the oil level is below the low mark, it’s time to add oil. Unscrew the oil cap, located on top of the engine, and pour in small amounts of oil at a time. Recheck the level frequently to avoid overfilling.

Importance of Checking Car Oil Regularly

It’s important to check your car oil often, such as monthly or before long trips out of Orland Park. Checking your car’s oil level is essential for several reasons:

  • Engine Performance: Adequate oil levels ensure smooth engine operation, minimizing friction and wear on vital components.
  • Engine Longevity: Properly lubricated engines have an extended lifespan, reducing the risk of costly repairs.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Maintaining the right oil level can improve fuel efficiency, saving you money on gas.
  • Preventing Damage: Low oil levels can lead to engine overheating and potential breakdowns, which can be costly and dangerous.
